Multilamellar liposomes composed of 1:1 dielaidoylphosphatidylcholine: dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine at 20 degrees C contain laterally separated gel and liquid-crystalline phases that can be identified by electron microscopy in freeze-etch replicas on the basis of their distinctive morphology.
