In order to investigate the relationship between radiation dose-rate and bacterial DNA damage as well as general cellular toxicity, two recombinant Escherichia coli strains, DPD2794 and GC2 were used. Following gamma-ray irradiation, these bioluminescent bacteria showed quantitative stress responses in terms of DNA damage and general toxicity depending on the dose rates of energy deposition, i.e. dose-rate of radiation.
