We present CHANDRA X-ray and NTT optical observations of the distant z= 0:52 galaxy cluster RBS 380 - the most distant cluster of the ROSAT Bright Source (RBS) catalogue. We find diuse, non-spherically symmetric X-ray emission with a X-ray luminosity of LX(0:3 10 keV) = 1:6 10 44 erg/s, which is lower than expected from the RBS. The reason is a bright AGN in the centre of the cluster contributing considerably to the X-ray flux. This AGN could not be resolved with ROSAT. In optical wavelength we…

Keys to Cosmology - Clusters of Galaxies
We review several aspects of clusters of galaxies and their application to cosmology. We present first results of numerical simulations of the dynamics of the intra-cluster gas and of different
Asmooth: a simple and efficient algorithm for adaptive kernel smoothing of two-dimensional imaging data
An efficient algorithm for adaptive kernel smoothing (AKS) of two-dimensional imaging data has been developed and implemented using the Interactive Data Language (idl). The functional form of the

Discovery of depressions in the X-ray emission of the distant galaxy cluster RBS797 in a CHANDRA observation
We present CHANDRA observations of the X-ray luminous, distant galaxy cluster RBS797 at z = 0.35. In the central region the X-ray emission shows two pronounced X-ray minima, which are located
Evolution since Z = 0.5 of the morphology-density relation for clusters of galaxies
Using traditional morphological classifications of galaxies in 10 intermediate-redshift (z similar to 0.5) clusters observed with WFPC2 on the Hubble Space Telescope, we derive relations between
A New Method For Galaxy Cluster Detection. I. The Algorithm
Numerous methods for finding clusters at moderate to high redshifts have been proposed in recent years, at wavelengths ranging from radio to X-rays. In this paper we describe a new method for
Distant Cluster Hunting: A Comparison Between the Optical and X-Ray Luminosity Functions from an Optical/X-Ray Joint Survey
We present a comparison of X-ray and optical luminosities and luminosity functions of cluster candidates from a joint optical/X-ray survey, the ROSAT Optical X-Ray Survey. Completely independent
The Slope of the Cluster Elliptical Red Sequence: A Probe of Cluster Evolution
The current formation models for cluster elliptical galaxies, which incorporate a mechanism for the metallicity enhancement of massive elliptical galaxies, predict a change in the observed slope of
Color--absolute magnitude relation for E and S0 galaxies. III. Fully corrected photometry for 405 galaxies: comparison of color distributions for E and S0 field and cluster galaxies. [Virgo, coma, centaurus, and fornax clusters]
Colors in u - V and V - r, corrected for color-aperture gradient, galactic reddening, K dimming, and color--absolute magnitude effect, together with corrected V magnitudes, are listed for 405
