We study the stellar angular momentum of thousands of galaxies in the Illustris cosmological simulation, which captures gravitational and gas dynamics within galaxies, as well as feedback from stars and black holes. We find that the angular momentum of the simulated galaxies matches observations well, and in particular two distinct relations are found for late-type versus early-type galaxies. The relation for late-type galaxies corresponds to the value expected from full conservation of the…

The Impact of Galactic Winds on the Angular Momentum of Disk Galaxies in the Illustris Simulation
Observed galactic disks have specific angular momenta similar to expectations for typical dark matter halos in $\Lambda$CDM. Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have recently reproduced this
The inner structure of early-type galaxies in the Illustris simulation
Early-type galaxies provide unique tests for the predictions of the cold dark matter cosmology and the baryonic physics assumptions entering models for galaxy formation. In this work, we use the
Angular momentum evolution for galaxies in a Lambda-CDM scenario
Galaxy formation in the current cosmological paradigm is a very complex process in which inflows, outflows, interactions and mergers are common events. These processes can redistribute the angular
Angular momentum content in gas-rich dwarf galaxies
We derive the specific baryonic angular momentum of five gas rich dwarf galaxies from HI kinematics complemented by stellar mass profiles. Since the gas mass of these galaxies is much larger than the
Structural and dynamical properties of galaxies in a hierarchical Universe: sizes and specific angular momenta
We study the size and the specific angular momentum of galaxies in a state-of-the-art semi-analytic model. Our model includes a specific treatment for the exchange of angular momentum between
The evolution of sizes and specific angular momenta in hierarchical models of galaxy formation and evolution
We extend our previous work focused at z ∼ 0, studying the redshift evolution of galaxy dynamical properties using the state-of-the-art semi-analytic model GAEA (GAlaxy Evolution and Assembly): we
Angular momentum evolution of galaxies in EAGLE
We use the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamic simulation suite to study the specific angular momentum of galaxies, j, with the aims of (i) investigating the physical causes behind the wide range of j
CONNECTING ANGULAR MOMENTUM AND GALACTIC DYNAMICS: THE COMPLEX INTERPLAY BETWEEN SPIN, MASS, AND MORPHOLOGY
The evolution and distribution of the angular momentum of dark matter halos have been discussed in several studies over the last decades. In particular, the idea arose that angular momentum
THE IMPACT of STELLAR FEEDBACK on the STRUCTURE, SIZE, and MORPHOLOGY of GALAXIES in MILKY-WAY-SIZED DARK MATTER HALOS
We use cosmological zoom-in simulations of galaxy formation in a Milky-Way-sized halo started from identical initial conditions to investigate the evolution of galaxy sizes, baryon fractions,
The origin of the diverse morphologies and kinematics of Milky Way-mass galaxies in the FIRE-2 simulations.
TLDR
Hydrodynamic cosmological zoom-in simulations from the Feedback in Realistic Environments project are used to explore the morphologies and kinematics of 15 Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies, finding the best predictor of morphology is the spin of the gas in the halo at the time the galaxy formed 1/2 of its stars.

Bulges versus discs: the evolution of angular momentum in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation
We investigate the evolution of angular momentum in simulations of galaxy formation in a cold dark matter universe. We analyse two model galaxies generated in the N-body/hydrodynamic simulations of
Hierarchical formation of bulgeless galaxies: why outflows have low angular momentum
Using high resolution, fully cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamical simulations of dwarf galaxies in a Lambda cold dark matter Universe, we show how high redshift gas outflows can modify the
The formation of massive, compact galaxies at z = 2 in the Illustris simulation
Massive, quiescent galaxies at high redshift have been found to be considerably more compact than galaxies of similar mass in the local universe. How these compact galaxies formed has yet to be
A model for cosmological simulations of galaxy formation physics: multi-epoch validation
We present a multi-epoch analysis of the galaxy populations formed within the cosmological hydrodynamical simulations presented in Vogelsberger et al. (2013). These simulations explore the
ANGULAR MOMENTUM AND GALAXY FORMATION REVISITED
Motivated by a new wave of kinematical tracers in the outer regions of early-type galaxies (ellipticals and lenticulars), we re-examine the role of angular momentum in galaxies of all types. We
Formation of Disk Galaxies: Feedback and the Angular Momentum Problem
When only cooling processes are included, smoothed-particle hydrodynamical (SPH) simulations of galaxy formation in a cold dark matter hierarchical clustering scenario consistently produce collapsed
ANGULAR MOMENTUM ACQUISITION IN GALAXY HALOS
We use high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to study the angular momentum acquisition of gaseous halos around Milky-Way-sized galaxies. We find that cold mode accreted gas enters a
An analytic model of angular momentum transport by gravitational torques: from galaxies to massive black holes
We present analytic calculations of angular momentum transport and gas inflow in galaxies, from scales of ∼ kpc to deep inside the potential of a central massive black hole (BH). We compare these
The radius of baryonic collapse in disc galaxy formation
In the standard picture of disc galaxy formation, baryons and dark matter receive the same tidal torques, and therefore approximately the same initial specific angular momentum. However, observations
The colours of satellite galaxies in the Illustris simulation
Observationally, the fraction of blue satellite galaxies decreases steeply with host halo mass, and their radial distribution around central galaxies is significantly shallower in massive (M* ≥ 1011
