The ion injector chain for the LHC has to be adapted and modified to reach the design beam parameters. Up to now an ECR4 delivered the ion beam for the SPS fixed target physics programme. This source will be replaced by a higher intensity source to produce the Pb27+ ion current required to fill the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR). The new ion source will be based on the Grenoble Test Source which was itself based on empirical scaling laws derived from the Framework 5 “Innovative ECRIS” collaboration… Expand
Operation of the GTS-LHC Source for the Hadron Injector at CERN
The GTS-LHC ion source, designed and build by CEA Grenoble, was installed and commissioned at CERN in 2005. Since than the source has delivered oxygen and lead ion beams (O 4+ and Pb 27+ from theExpand
Ions for LHC: Beam Physics and Engineering Challenges
The first phase of the heavy ion physics program at the LHC aims to provide lead-lead collisions at energies of 5.5 TeV per colliding nucleon pair and ion-ion luminosity of 1027cm-2s-1. TheExpand
The LHC Lead Injector Chain
A sizeable part of the LHC physics programme foresees lead-lead collisions with a design luminosity of 10 cms. This will be achieved after an upgrade of the ion injector chain comprising Linac3,Expand
Study of the Lead Evaporation from the Oven of the GTS-LHC Ion Source
The GTS-LHC ECR ion source at CERN provides heavy ion beams for the chain of accelerators from Linac3 up to the LHC and the SPS fixed target experiments. During the standard operation the ovenExpand
Lead evaporation instabilities and failure mechanisms of the micro oven at the GTS-LHC ECR ion source at CERN.
TLDR
It was observed that the measured evaporation rate of the oven can vary spontaneously in a wide range even when stable operating conditions are applied to the oven controls, and several ways to improve the oven stability were tested, including insulation changes and modifications of theoven crucible. Redesign of CERN LINAC3 RFQ for Lead 29
CERN Linac3 is at the heart of the CERN Heavy Ion Facility, providing 4.2 MeV/u ion beams to the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR). It mostly accelerates 208Pb29+, though in recent years runs were performedExpand
The 2017 Xe run at CERN Linac3: Measurements and beam dynamics simulations.
TLDR
The measurements performed during the machine development time allocated to characterize the line from the source to the filtering section are summarized and the improved understanding of the machine critical areas is proposed. Expand
Effect of double frequency heating on the lead afterglow beam currents of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source
The effect of double frequency heating on the performance of the CERN GTS-LHC 14.5 GHz Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source in afterglow mode is reported. The source of the secondaryExpand
Light ion production for a future radiobiological facility at CERN: preliminary studies.
TLDR
The aims of this project will be presented along with the modifications required to the existing linear accelerator (Linac3), and the foreseen facility, including the requirements for an ion source in terms of some of the specification parameters and the flexibility of operation for different ion types.
