We revisit the radiation mechanism of relativistic electrons in the stochastic magnetic field and apply it to the high-energy emissions of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We confirm that jitter radiation is a possible explanation for GRB prompt emission in the condition of a large electron deflection angle. In the turbulent scenario, the radiative spectral property of GRB prompt emission is decided by the kinetic energy spectrum of turbulence. The intensity of the random and small-scale magnetic field…

GRB PROMPT EMISSION: TURBULENCE, MAGNETIC FIELD AND JITTER RADIATION

The jitter radiation, which is the emission of relativistic electrons in the random and small-scale magnetic field, is utilized to investigate the high-energy emission of gamma-ray bursts. We produce

APPLICATION OF JITTER RADIATION: GAMMA-RAY BURST PROMPT POLARIZATION

A high degree of polarization of gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emission has been confirmed in recent years. In this paper, we apply jitter radiation to study the polarization feature of GRB prompt

Jitter radiation: towards TeV-photons of gamma-ray bursts

The synchrotron mechanism has the radiation limit of about 160 MeV, and it is not possible to explain the very high energy (VHE) photons that are emitted by high-energy objects. Inverse Compton

JITTER SELF-COMPTON PROCESS: GeV EMISSION OF GRB 100728A

Jitter radiation, the emission of relativistic electrons in a random and small-scale magnetic field, has been applied to explain the gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emission. The seed photons produced

JITTER POLARIZATION FOR GRB PROMPT EMISSION

The radiation of relativistic electrons in random and small-scale magnetic field is called jitter radiation. We apply jitter process to study the polarization feature of GRB prompt emission. A

Relativistic Shocks: Particle Acceleration and Magnetization

We review the physics of relativistic shocks, which are often invoked as the sources of non-thermal particles in pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), and active galactic nuclei (AGN)

Linear Polarization, Circular Polarization, and Depolarization of Gamma-ray Bursts: A Simple Case of Jitter Radiation

Linear and circular polarizations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been detected recently. We adopt a simplified model to investigate GRB polarization characteristics in this paper. A compressed

Magnetic field induced by strong transverse plasmons in ultra-relativistic electron-positron plasmas

Context. We investigated the generation of localized magnetic fields in an ultra-relativistic non-isothermal electron-positron plasma by strong electromagnetic plasmons. Aims. The results obtained

THE EFFECT OF COOLING ON PARTICLE TRAJECTORIES AND ACCELERATION IN RELATIVISTIC MAGNETIC RECONNECTION

The maximum synchrotron burnoff limit of 160 MeV represents a fundamental limit to radiation resulting from electromagnetic particle acceleration in one-zone ideal plasmas. In magnetic reconnection,

Implications of electron acceleration for high-energy radiation from gamma-ray bursts

In recent work, we suggested that photons of energy >100 MeV detected from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by the Fermi satellite are produced via synchrotron emission in the external forward shock with a

Generation of Magnetic Fields in the Relativistic Shock of Gamma-Ray Burst Sources

We show that the relativistic two-stream instability can naturally generate strong magnetic fields with 10-5-10-1 of the equipartition energy density, in the collisionless shocks of gamma-ray burst

MODELING SPECTRAL VARIABILITY OF PROMPT GAMMA-RAY BURST EMISSION WITHIN THE JITTER RADIATION PARADIGM

The origin of rapid spectral variability and certain spectral correlations of prompt gamma-ray burst emission remains an intriguing question. The recently proposed theoretical model of the prompt

Magnetic Fields in Gamma-Ray Bursts: A Short Overview

Magnetic fields play a crucial role in the physics of Gamma‐Ray Bursts (GRBs). Strong observational evidence indicates that the observed afterglow and most likely the prompt emission arise from

Theory of “Jitter” Radiation from Small-Scale Random Magnetic Fields and Prompt Emission from Gamma-Ray Burst Shocks

We demonstrate that the radiation emitted by ultrarelativistic electrons in highly nonuniform, small-scale magnetic fields is different from synchrotron radiation if the electron's transverse

It is demonstrated that the Weibel theory inevitably predicts that epsilone approximately radical epsilonB is close to equipartition in gamma-ray bursts, and the GRB afterglow data fully agree with this theoretical prediction.

Radiation Signatures of Sub-Larmor Scale Magnetic Fields

Spontaneous rapid growth of strong magnetic fields is rather ubiquitous in high-energy density environments ranging from astrophysical sources (e.g., gamma-ray bursts and relativistic shocks), to

GRB 080319B: evidence for relativistic turbulence, not internal shocks

We show that the excellent optical and gamma-ray data available for GRB 080319B rule out the internal shock model for the prompt emission. The data instead point to a model in which the observed

Radiative Signatures of Relativistic Shocks

Particle-in-cell simulations of relativistic, weakly magnetized collisionless shocks show that particles can gain energy by repeatedly crossing the shock front. This requires scattering off

GRB 080916C: ON THE RADIATION ORIGIN OF THE PROMPT EMISSION FROM keV/MeV TO GeV

Fermi observations of high-energy gamma-ray emission from GRB 080916C shows that its spectrum is consistent with the band function from MeV to tens of GeV. Assuming one single emission mechanism
