We present two-dimensional stellar kinematics of M87 out to R = 238″ taken with the integral field spectrograph VIRUS-P. We run a large set of axisymmetric, orbit-based dynamical models and find clear evidence for a massive dark matter halo. While a logarithmic parameterization for the dark matter halo is preferred, we do not constrain the dark matter scale radius for a Navarro–Frenk–White (NFW) profile and therefore cannot rule it out. Our best-fit logarithmic models return an enclosed dark…

ORBIT-BASED DYNAMICAL MODELS OF THE SOMBRERO GALAXY (NGC 4594)

We present axisymmetric, orbit-based models to study the central black hole (BH), stellar mass-to-light ratio (M/L), and dark matter (DM) halo of NGC 4594 (M104, the Sombrero Galaxy). For stellar

A discrete chemo-dynamical model of M87’s globular clusters: Kinematics extending to ∼400 kpc

We study the mass distribution and kinematics of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 (NGC 4486) using discrete chemo-dynamical, axisymmetric Jeans equation modelling. Our catalogue comprises 894 globular

THE BLACK HOLE MASS AND THE STELLAR RING IN NGC 3706

We determine the mass of the nuclear black hole (M) in NGC 3706, an early-type galaxy with a central surface brightness minimum arising from an apparent stellar ring, which is misaligned with respect

THE NEXT GENERATION VIRGO CLUSTER SURVEY. V. MODELING THE DYNAMICS OF M87 WITH THE MADE-TO-MEASURE METHOD

We study the dynamics of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 from the central to the outermost regions with the made-to-measure (M2M) method. We use a new catalog of 922 globular cluster line-of-sight

Dynamical models of elliptical galaxies – II. M87 and its globular clusters

We study the Globular Cluster (GC) system of the nearby elliptical galaxy M87 using the newly available dataset with accurate kinematics provided by Strader et al. (2011). We find evidence for three

The massive dark halo of the compact early-type galaxy NGC 1281

We investigate the compact, early-type galaxy NGC 1281 with integral field unit observations to map the stellar LOSVD out to 5 effective radii and construct orbit-based dynamical models to constrain

Dark matter inner slope and concentration in galaxies: from the Fornax dwarf to M87

Abstract We apply two new state-of-the-art methods that model the distribution of observed tracers in projected phase space to lift the mass / velocity anisotropy (VA) degeneracy and deduce

The VIRGO PN population and the mass assembly in M87

TLDR
This accretion event in the outskirt of M87 represents a non-negligible perturbation of the halo light, showing that this galaxy is still growing by accretion of smaller systems.

DYNAMICAL MEASUREMENTS OF BLACK HOLE MASSES IN FOUR BRIGHTEST CLUSTER GALAXIES AT 100 Mpc

We present stellar kinematics and orbit superposition models for the central regions of four brightest cluster galaxies, based upon integral-field spectroscopy at Gemini, Keck, and McDonald

THE RISING STELLAR VELOCITY DISPERSION OF M87 FROM INTEGRATED STARLIGHT

We have measured the line-of-sight velocity distribution from integrated stellar light at two points in the outer halo of M87 (NGC 4486), the second-rank galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. The data were

THE SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE AND DARK MATTER HALO OF NGC 4649 (M60)

We apply the axisymmetric orbit superposition modeling to estimate the mass of the supermassive black hole (BH) and dark matter (DM) halo profile of NGC 4649. We have included data sets from the

Dark halo properties from rotation curves

We study a large set of high spatial resolution optical rotation curves of galaxies with the goal of determining the model parameters for a disc embedded within a cold dark matter (CDM) halo, which

The distribution of dark matter in the halo of M87

We investigate the constraints that can be placed on the distribution of dark matter around M87 using the 43 globular cluster velocities reported by Mould et al. [AJ, 99, 1823 (1990)]. If the

A Chandra View of Dark Matter in Early-Type Galaxies

We present a Chandra study of mass profiles in seven elliptical galaxies, of which three have galaxy-scale and four have group-scale halos, demarcated at 1013 M☉. These represent the best available

MAPPING THE DARK SIDE WITH DEIMOS: GLOBULAR CLUSTERS, X-RAY GAS, AND DARK MATTER IN THE NGC 1407 GROUP

NGC 1407 is the central elliptical in a nearby evolved group of galaxies apparently destined to become a galaxy cluster core. We use the kinematics of globular clusters (GCs) to probe the dynamics

Mass models of spiral galaxies based on the observed light distribution, assuming constant M /L for bulge and disc, are able to reproduce the observed rotation curves in the inner regions, but fail

Massive Dark Matter Halos and Evolution of Early-Type Galaxies to z ≈ 1

The combination of gravitational lensing and stellar dynamics breaks the mass-anisotropy degeneracy and provides stringent constraints on the distribution of luminous and dark matter in early-type

NO EVIDENCE FOR A DARK MATTER DISK WITHIN 4 kpc FROM THE GALACTIC PLANE

We estimated the dynamical surface mass density (Σ) at the solar Galactocentric distance between 2 and 4 kpc from the Galactic plane, as inferred from the observed kinematics of the thick disk. We

THE BLACK HOLE MASS, STELLAR MASS-TO-LIGHT RATIO, AND DARK HALO IN M87

The Structure of cold dark matter halos

High resolution N-body simulations show that the density profiles of dark matter halos formed in the standard CDM cosmogony can be fit accurately by scaling a simple “universal” profile. Regardless
