Following unilateral kainic acid lesioning of neuronal cell bodies in the cat red nucleus (RN), a large decrease in glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) activity was detected in the injected RN, compared to the RN from control, non-injected animals. Using GAD immunohistochemistry, reactive perikarya were visualized dorsolaterally to the rostral part of the nucleus as well as within the RN proper.
