}Our purpose was to determine whether endogenously released GABA in the ventrolateral nucleus of the solitary tract (vlNTS) of the rat influences respiration. Experiments were carried out in anesthetized, vagotomized and spontaneously breathing rats, and diaphragm electromyogram activity was measured while drugs affecting GABAergic neurotransmission were microinjected into the vlNTS and medial NTS (mNTS). Bilateral microinjection of nipecotic acid, 5 or 25 nmol, into the vlNTS (but not in the…

GABA-mediated neurotransmission in the nucleus of the solitary tract alters resting ventilation following exposure to chronic hypoxia in conscious rats.
- BiologyAmerican journal of physiology. Regulatory, integrative and comparative physiology

Results suggest that changes in GABA receptor-mediated neurotransmission, within the NTS, are involved in the increase in resting ventilation that occurs following exposure to chronic hypoxia.
micro-Opioid receptor stimulation in the medial subnucleus of the tractus solitarius inhibits gastric tone and motility by reducing local GABA activity.
- BiologyAmerican journal of physiology. Gastrointestinal and liver physiology
- 2010
The data suggest that opioids play an important role in mediating a vagovagal reflex through release of an endogenous opioid in the mNTS, which, in turn, inhibits ongoing local GABA activity and allows vagal sensory input to excite second-order mN TS neurons.
Noradrenergic, serotonergic and GABAergic antagonists injected together into the XII nucleus abolish the REM sleep‐like depression of hypoglossal motoneuronal activity

It is concluded that antagonism of α‐adrenergic, serotonergic, and GABAA receptors are sufficient to abolish the REM sleep‐like atonia of XII motoneurons.

The data demonstrate the presence of intra-NTS GABAergic signaling between the vagal afferent nerve terminals and inhibitory projection neurons in the NTS and that the cholinergic-cholinergic excitatory pathway comprises the functionally relevant efferent arm of the vagovagal circuit.

Evidence is provided that the gastric musculature is regulated by a “single effector” DMV pathway using acetylcholine, and this possibility is so fundamental to how the brain-gut axis may interact in light of both peripheral and central demands.
Hindbrain chemical mediators of reflex-induced inhibition of gastric tone produced by esophageal distension and intravenous nicotine.

- 2005
Data from this study, in combination with earlier pharmacological microinjection data with nicotine, indicate that both esophageal distension and nicotine produce nitric oxide in the NTS, which then activates noradrenergic neurons that terminate on and inhibit DMV neurons.

From the data, it is suggested that the CNS has the capacity to provide region-specific control over the proximal (fundus) and distal (antrum) stomach through engaging phenotypically different efferent inputs to the DMV.

It is suggested that local stimulation of neurons in a specific region of the NTS elicits vagally mediated alterations of tonic GP and phasic activity and that AP and GP can be influenced independently in the medial NTS region.

Chronic hypertension is associated with an upregulation of GABAB receptor function; however, the tonic activity of the system does not appear to be different between normotensive and hypertensive rats.
