The purpose of this paper is to show that the standard fuzzy arithmetic does not take into account known constraints when applied to states of linguistic variables. These constraints, referred to as requisite constraints, represent additional information. When they are ignored, as in the standard fuzzy arithmetic, the obtained results exhibit, in general, information deficiency.
