This fungus was first described by Underwood in 1899 (3) from type material collected in Maine. Thirty-eight years passed before there appeared in the literature a report of a second collection of this species, this time coming from Canada (1). During the summer of 1936 Mrs. P. F. Shope collected this fungus in Colorado from the forest floor of an Engelman spruce forest, Middle Boulder Canyon, elevation 10,500 feet.
