Progression in resistance training is a dynamic process that requires an exercise prescription process, evaluation of training progress, and careful development of target goals. The process starts with the determination of individual needs and training goals. This involves decisions regarding questions as to what muscles must be trained, injury prevention sites, metabolic demands of target training goals, etc. The single workout must then be designed reflecting these targeted program goals…

Progression and Resistance Training
TLDR
The critical elements to progression during resistance training and the current recommendations for manipulating the acute program variables are discussed.
American College of Sports Medicine position stand. Progression models in resistance training for healthy adults.
TLDR
In order to stimulate further adaptation toward a specific training goal(s), progression in the type of resistance training protocol used is necessary and emphasis should be placed on multiple-joint exercises, especially those involving the total body.
INFLUENCE OF EXERCISE ORDER IN A RESISTANCE‐TRAINING EXERCISE SESSION
TLDR
It is shown that performing the squat exercise after a whole-body workout session may result in greater power output if the squat is preceded by a power exercise (i.e., hang pull), due to postactivation potentiation.

TLDR
Progression in power training entails two general loading strategies: strength training and use of light loads performed at a fast contraction velocity with 3-5 min of rest between sets for multiple sets per exercise (three to five sets).
Effect of Repetition Duration During Resistance Training on Muscle Hypertrophy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
TLDR
Findings suggest that training at volitionally very slow durations (>10s per repetition) is inferior from a hypertrophy standpoint, although a lack of controlled studies on the topic makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions.
The effects of exercise variation in muscle thickness, maximal strength and motivation in resistance trained men
TLDR
Varying exercise selection had a positive effect on enhancing motivation to train in resistance-trained men, while eliciting similar improvements in muscular adaptations.
Resistance Training and Stroke: A Critical Analysis of Different Training Programs
TLDR
A critical analysis of the resistance exercise programs surveyed and positive effects of training were found on anxiety status, quality of life, muscle hypertrophy, cognitive function, strength, and muscle power.
Effects of German Volume Training on Muscle Strength and Muscle Hypertrophy
Strength training is a kind of practice intended to enhance muscle strength and hypertrophy. To maximize these training adaptations, the appropriate modulation of resistance training variables is
Monitoring the training dose and acute fatigue response during elbow flexor resistance training using a custom-made resistance band
TLDR
A pilot study evaluates the performance of the segmentation algorithm and shows the capability of the system in monitoring the compliance of patients to a prescribed training program in a practical resistance training setting, providing clinicians and researchers with an automated and objective method for quantifying home-based elbow flexor resistance training.
Acute Resistance Exercise Program Variables and Subsequent Hormonal Response
TLDR
An updated paradigm of resistance exercise variables and the effect manipulating these has on signalling pathways and hormonal response to optimise RE adaptations is presented.

Resistance training for health and performance
TLDR
Proper program design, ie, that which uses progressive overload, variation, and specificity, is essential to maximize the benefits associated with resistance training.

The Influence of Volume of Exercise on Early Adaptations to Strength Training
TLDR
Results show a superior adaptation to 3-set strength training, compared with 1-setstrength training, in leg exercises but not in upper-body exercises during the early phase of adaptation.
Effect of resistance training on muscle use during exercise.
TLDR
It is suggested that short-term resistance training reduces MR image contrast shift evoked by a given effort, thereby reflecting the use of less muscle to lift the load.
Physiologic responses to heavy-resistance exercise with very short rest periods.
TLDR
Heart rate, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), and lactate levels were obtained during the exercise protocol; significant increases were observed above rest for these variables and decreases in eosinophil counts were observed following exercise.
Influence of Resistance Training Volume and Periodization on Physiological and Performance Adaptations in Collegiate Women Tennis Players
TLDR
The data demonstrate that sport-specific resistance training using a periodized multiple-set training method is superior to low-volume single-set resistance exercise protocols in the development of physical abilities in competitive, collegiate women tennis players.
Manipulating Exercise Order Affects Muscular Performance During a Resistance Exercise Training Session
TLDR
Fatigue rate and TF for the bench press were substantially decreased when single-jointed exercises preceded structural ones and greater when structural exercises (multijointed) were done first.
The optimal training load for the development of dynamic athletic performance.
TLDR
The experimental group which trained with the load that maximized mechanical power achieved the best overall results in enhancing dynamic athletic performance recording statistically significant (P < 0.05) improvements on most test items and producing statistically superior results to the two other training modalities on the jumping and isokinetic tests.
Importance of eccentric actions in performance adaptations to resistance training.
TLDR
The results indicate that omission of ecc actions from resistance training compromises increases in strength, probably because intensity is not optimal.
