In higher plants, peroxisomes accomplish a variety of physiological functions such as lipid catabolism, photorespiration and hormone biosynthesis. Recently, many factors regulating peroxisomal biogenesis, so-called PEX genes, have been identified not only in plants but also in yeasts and mammals.
