Recent observations suggest a role for interleukin 1 beta (IL-1) in the autoimmune beta-cell destruction observed in type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. We investigated the acute and long-term effects of IL-1 on pancreatic beta-cell function in vitro. Rat pancreatic islets were isolated and kept in tissue culture for 5 days.
