Introduction Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a highly prevalent disorder, accounting for 5% of primary-care visits and imposing an economic burden of at least $1 billion per year to the US health-care system (1–4). FD is currently defined by Rome III criteria— symptoms of postprandial fullness, early satiety, or epigastric burning without any evidence of a structural disorder thought to explain symptom expression.
