The brown seaweed Adenocystis utricularis (family Adenocystaceae, order Ectocarpales sensu lato) was extracted in parallel with three solvents usually utilized for obtaining fucoidans: distilled water, 2% calcium chloride solution and diluted hydrochloric acid (pH 2) solution. In each case, the extraction was effected at room temperature and then at 70 degrees C. The extraction yields and characteristics of the products were similar in the three cases, with only minor differences. The… Expand
The effectiveness of the Fucus virsoides and Cystoseira barbata fucoidan isolation as a function of applied pre-treatment and extraction conditions
Abstract Fucus virsoides and Cystoseira barbata are important sources of sulfated polysaccharide fucoidan which shows a wide range of biological activities. These activities are significantlyExpand

TLDR
Structural analysis indicates that 3-O-sulfation at C-3 of 4-alpha-L-fucose 1-> units is responsible for the anticoagulant activity of the polymer, indicating that the brown algae Padina gymnospora contain different fucans. Expand
The system of fucoidans from the brown seaweed Dictyota dichotoma: chemical analysis and antiviral activity.
TLDR
Fractionation by means of cetrimide precipitation and redissolution in increasing sodium chloride solutions has allowed obtaining several subfractions from each extract, and moderate inhibitory effect against herpes virus (HSV-1) and Coxsackie virus (CVB3) were found for the galactofucan-rich fractions. Expand
Characterization of polysaccharides extracted from brown seaweeds
TLDR
The structural characteristics of polysaccharides extracted from Quebec's seaweed have not been fully established to date and characterization will lead to a better understanding of their functional characteristics and promote the exploitation of this natural resource. Expand
Purification and Characterization of Fucoidan from the Brown Seaweed Sargassum binderi Sonder
The brown seaweed Sargassumsp. is well known as a source of fucoidan. Brown seaweeds found in Indonesia seas are dominated by Sargassum sp.The objectives of this research was to purify andExpand
Anti-tumour activities of fucoidan from the aquatic plant Utricularia aurea lour
TLDR
The inhibition was postulated to occur via apoptosis as significantly more apoptotic cells were found after treatment than in the untreated KB cells by the TUNNEL (TdT-mediated dUTP Nick-End Labelling) assay. Expand
Polysaccharides composition from tropical brown seaweeds
TLDR
The Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectra of fucoidan extracted from species studied indicated that the majority of sulfate groups are located at C‐4 and to a lesser extent at C-2 and/or C‐3 of the fucopyranose residues, which could be advantageous since several therapeutic effects have been reported for fucoidans with similar characteristics. Expand
Fucoidans from the phaeophyta Scytosiphon lomentaria: Chemical analysis and antiviral activity of the galactofucan component.
TLDR
A high and selective antiviral activity against HSv-1 and HSV-2 was determined for the galactofucan fractions whereas the uronofucoidans were inactive, and fucose is the most important monosaccharide in most of the subfractions of the subsequent extracts. Expand
Isolation Characterisation, Modification and Application of Fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus
Fucoidan is a natural occurring, heterogeneous sulphated marine polysaccharide from brown algae. Due to its special structure it is said to possess interesting biological activities. During theExpand

Structural studies on fucoidans from the brown seaweed Sargassum stenophyllum.
TLDR
Structural studies of one fucoidan from each set of fucoidans suggest that these products have a general basic structure that has a formal resemblance to that of the fucosylated chondroitin sulfates from the body wall of sea cucumbers. Expand
Structural features of a novel glucuronogalactofucan from ascophyllum nodosum
