We review recent progress in embedding the supersymmetric standard model into string theory. We discuss how, with the incorporation of certain aspects of grand unification, a search strategy can be developed that allows one to efficiently find rather large numbers of promising string vacua. Global string-derived models with the following features are discussed: (i) exact MSSM spectrum below the unification scale; (ii) R-parity; (iii) hierarchical Yukawa couplings with non-trivial mixing; (iv…
Phenomenological Hints from a Class of String Motivated Model Constructions
We use string theory constructions towards the generalisation of the supersymmetric standard model of strong and electroweak interactions. Properties of the models depend crucially on the location of
Gauge-top unification
Higher-dimensional models of grand unification allow us to relate the top Yukawa coupling yt to the gauge coupling g. The tree level relation yt = g at the scale of grand unification implies, in the
Phenomenology of supersymmetric Gauge-Higgs unification
Supersymmetric Gauge-Higgs Unification is a well-motivated new physics scenario, both in heterotic model building and from the perspective of higher-dimensional Grand Unified Theories. When combined
Challenges of String Theory: Particle Physics and Cosmology
We review some of the mechanisms that string theory offers to address phenomenological questions, such as the origin of our observable four-dimensional space-time, the standard model gauge symmetries
The Potential Fate of Local Model Building
We analyse local models at the point of E8 in F-theory GUTs and identify exactly two models with potentially realistic properties concerning proton stability and a suitable pattern of quark and
Discriminating MSSM families in (free-field)
A complete analysis of orientifold compactifications involving Gepner models that are free fields (k=1,2) is performed. A set of tadpole solutions is found that are variants of a single chiral
Aspects of extra dimensional supersymmetric unified theories
Although one does not know (yet) which phenomenon unitarizes WLWL scattering at the TeV scale, indirect data currently favors the Higgs boson. Since such a scalar particle is susceptible to become as
Aspects of beyond the Standard Model string phenomenology
String theory is currently the best-known candidate for a theory of quantum gravity, having the necessary ingredients to describe all known elementary particles and interactions. It also includes

Seesaw neutrinos from the heterotic string.
TLDR
It is argued that this situation is quite common in heterotic orbifolds, where no large GUT representations are needed to generate the Majorana mass terms and the total number of right-handed neutrinos can be very large, up to O(100).
Supersymmetric standard model from the heterotic string.
TLDR
A orbifold compactification of the E8xE8 heterotic string which leads to the (supersymmetric) standard model gauge group and matter content and the model is consistent with gauge coupling unification.
Low energy supersymmetry from the heterotic string landscape.
TLDR
It is found that requiring realistic features does affect the hidden sector such that hidden sector gauge group factors SU(4) and SO(8) are favored, which implies low energy supersymmetry breaking in the context of gaugino condensation.
Notes on Local Grand Unification
Grand unified models in four dimensions typically suffer from the doublet-triplet splitting problem. This obstacle can be overcome in higher-dimensional settings, where a non-trivial gauge group
Mirage pattern from the heterotic string
We provide a simple example of dilaton stabilization in the framework of heterotic string theory. It requires a gaugino condensate and an uplifting sector similar to the one postulated in type IIB
