We review in a pedagogical manner some of the efforts aimed at extending the gauge/gravity correspondence to nonconformal supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions. After giving a general overview, we discuss in detail two specific examples: fractional D-branes on orbifolds and D-branes wrapped on supersymmetric cycles of Calabi–Yau spaces. We explore in particular which gauge theory information can be extracted from the corresponding supergravity solutions, and what the remaining open…

Branes, Calibrations and Supergravity

These notes are based on lectures given at the Clay School on Geometry and String Theory, Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge, 25 March - 19 April 2002. They attempt to provide an elementary and

Non-perturbative gauge/gravity correspondence in N = 2 theories

: We derive the exact supergravity profile for the twisted scalar field emitted by a system of fractional D3 branes at a Z 2 orbifold singularity supporting N = 2 quiver gauge theories with unitary

The Gauge/String Correspondence Towards Realistic Gauge Theories 1

This report presents some studies of the gauge/string theory correspondence, a deep relation that is possible to establish between quantum field theories with local gauge symmetry and superstring

Brane-inspired orientifold field theories

In this paper we consider the gauge theory living on the world-volume of a stack of N D3-branes of type 0B/Ω'I6(−1)FL and of its orbifolds C2/2 and C3/(2 × 2). The gauge theories obtained in the

Topics in gauge/gravity dualities

This thesis consists in a self-contained study of gauge/gravity dualities in the line of the KlebanovWitten model. Here we explore first the known Maldacena duality that relates N = 4 SYM theory in

Anomalies and tadpoles in open/closed string duality

We discuss the role played by the divergences appearing in the interaction between a fractional D3 brane dressed with an SU(N) gauge field and a stack of N fractional D3 branes on the orbifolds C2/Z2

Lecture 5 D-Branes on the Conifold and N = 1 Gauge/Gravity Dualities

We review extensions of the AdS/CFT correspondence to gauge/ gravity dualities with N = 1 supersymmetry. In particular, we describe the gauge/gravity dualities that emerge from placing D3-branes at

D6 branes and M theory geometrical transitions from gauged supergravity

N=2 four-dimensional gauge theories from fractional branes

This is a pedagogical and extended version of the results published in Refs. [1,2] and presented by the authors in various talks during the last year. We discuss the type II D-branes (both regular

The Neveu-Schwarz five-brane and its dual geometries

In this paper we discuss two aspects of duality transformations on the Neveu-Schwarz (NS) 5-brane solutions in type II and heterotic string theories. First we demonstrate that the non-extremal NS
