These lectures from the 1995 Trieste Summer School in High Energy Physics and Cosmology give an elementary introduction to perturbative superstring theory, superstring phenomenology, and the fermionic construction of perturbative string models. These lectures assume no prior knowledge of string theory.

Unification picture in the minimal supersymmetric SU ( 5 ) model with string remnants

The significant heavy threshold effect is found in the minimal supersymmetric $\mathrm{SU}(5)$ model with two adjoint scalars, one of which is interpreted as a massive string mode largely decoupled

Recent developments in string duality suggest that the string scale may not be irrevocably tied to the Planck scale. Two explicit but unrealistic examples are described where the ratio of the string

Z(2)x Z(2)heterotic orbifold models of non factorisable six dimensional toroidal manifolds

We discuss heterotic strings on 2 × 2 orbifolds of non factorisable six-tori. Although the number of fixed tori is reduced as compared to the factorisable case, Wilson lines are still needed for the

Classification of the Chiral Z_2 x Z_2 Heterotic String Models

This thesis provides a classification of the chiral content of the heterotic $\mathbbm{Z}_2 \times \mathbbm{Z}_2$ orbifold models. We show that the chiral content of the heterotic $\mathbbm{Z}_2

Extracting predictions from Supergravity/Superstring for the effective theory below the Planck scale

The connection between Superstring theory and the low--energy world is analyzed. In particular, the soft Supersymmetry--breaking terms arising in Supergravity theories coming from Superstrings are

I briefly review the problems with previous investigations of supersymmetry breaking in string theory 1 at tree-level, at one-loop, and non-perturbatively. A variant of the original non-perturbative

Issues in dynamical supersymmetry breaking

Recent work has made clear that we have far more control over the dynamics of supersymmetric than non-supersymmetric theories. Here, I discuss some issues in dynamical supersymmetry breaking both in

SUPERSYMMETRY BREAKING IN STRING THEORY

I briefly review the problems with previous investigations of supersymmetry breaking in string theory --- at tree-level, at one-loop, and non-perturbatively. A variant of the original

Topics in string phenomenology

We consider two questions in string ``phenomenology.'' First, are there any generic string predictions? Second, are there any general lessons which string theory suggests for thinking about low

Strings, unification and dilaton / moduli induced SUSY breaking

I discuss several issues concerning the use of string models as unified theories of all interactions. After a short review of gauge coupling unification in the string context, I discuss possible
