Nitric oxide (˙NO) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of diverse inflammatory and infectious disorders,. The toxicity of ˙NO is thought to be engendered, in part, by its reaction with superoxide (O˙−2), yielding the potent oxidant peroxynitrite (ONOO−).
