We study the formation of five-dimensional string solutions including the Gregory–Laflamme (GL) black string, the Kaluza–Klein (KK) bubble and geometry with a naked singularity from gravitational collapse. The interior solutions of five-dimensional Einstein equations describe collapsing non-isotropic matter clouds. It is shown that the matter cloud always forms the GL black string solution while the KK bubble solution cannot be formed. The numerical study seems to suggest that the collapsing…

We study the dynamics of false vacuum bubbles. A nonminimally coupled scalar field gives rise to the effect of negative tension. The mass of a false vacuum bubble from an outside observer's point of…

Instabilities of black strings and branes
- Physics

We review recent progress on the instabilities of black strings and branes both for pure Einstein gravity as well as supergravity theories which are relevant for string theory. We focus mainly on…

This work argues that under very mild assumptions, classical event horizons cannot pinch off and settle down to new static black string solutions which are not translationally invariant along the string.

We investigate the evolution of small perturbations around black strings and branes which are low energy solutions of string theory. For simplicity we focus attention on the zero charge case and show…

We review the recently discovered ansatz that describes non‐extremal charged dilatonic branes of string/M‐theory with a transverse circle. The ansatz involves a new coordinate system that…

We consider 1+4 dimensional black-string solutions which are invariant under translation along the fifth direction. The solutions are characterized by the two parameters, mass and tension, of the…

Exact static, spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein-Abelian gauge-dilaton equations, in $D$-dimensional gravity with a chain of $n$ Ricci-flat internal spaces are considered, with the gauge…

All spherically symmetric vacuum solutions of the higher-dimensional Einstein equation in which the size of Ricci-flat compact internal manifolds varies with three-dimensional distance, subject to an asymptotic condition, are constructed.

We review the recently found map that takes any static and neutral Kaluza‐Klein black hole, i.e. any static and neutral black hole on Minkowski‐space times a circle ℳ︁d × S1, and maps it to a…
