Abstract Either one mixed monolayer or a super-monomolecular layer is formed on an air-water interface by controlling surface pressure π for a surface-active dye-fatty acid system. The mixed monolayer was obtained under lower π values, whereas higher π values resulted in the super-monomolecular structure characterized as a bilayer stack of a fatty acid monolayer and monolayer islands of the dye molecules squeezed out from the mixed monolayer.
