Following an introduction to containerships, formal safety assessment and its development in the shipping industry are described. Containership accident statistics are studied and discussed. This is followed by a description of containership characteristics and a proposed formal safety assessment methodology for containerships. Further development in formal safety assessment in the context of containership safety is "nally discussed in detail. 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
