The foreign women who were initially involved in the Kosovar sex industry are introduced in this chapter. In 1999, shortly after the end of the Kosovo War, women from Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine—and, to a lesser extent, Serbia and Bulgaria—entered Kosovo and engaged in prostitution. Studies on prostitution in the context of peacekeeping missions that feature foreign women tend to portray these women singularly as victims of trafficking.
