We tested several strategies of foraging that grazing herbivores may adopt in a patchy habitat in relation to energy intake. The patch selection of cattle was investigated in an Agrostis/Festuca grassland and in a Lolium grassland in 13 observation periods over 2 years. Both grasslands were stocked with five yearling steers. Bite counts were made on patches of different vegetation structure: short, tall and mature stemmy grass.
