This paper reviews the tumultuous history of electromagnetic launchers. It also studies various aspects of electromagnetic launch (EML), including an intriguing use in tank armor. Most of all, the recent history of railgun research is a cautionary tale about military R&D. The U.S. Army and Navy envision EM guns as a key component for the next generation of all-electric vehicles.
Electromagnetic radiation of railgun and shielding effects from its structures
The Navy railgun propels its projectile with Lorentz force, and is capable of delivering Mach 7-8 speed for ~15kg weight projectiles. The source of the Lorentz force is a GW pulsed power supply (PPS)Expand
Characteristics of Electromagnetic Radiation of a Railgun at the Final Firing Stage
The navy railgun prototype propels its projectile with Lorentz force and is capable of delivering ~Mach 7 speed for~15-kg projectiles. The source of the Lorentz force is a gigawatt-class pulsed powerExpand
Reluctance Launcher Coil-Gun Simulations and Experiment
Single-stage reluctance launcher simulations and experiment reaching velocity of 54.3 m/s are presented. A comparison between the experimental and two type of simulations, a numeric simulation and aExpand
Simulation and Analysis of the Railgun Muzzle Flow Field Considering the Arc Plasma
The electromagnetic railgun is a new concept weapon with the hypersonic launch capability. During the railgun launch process, the armature is accelerated along the rails. A complex and high-speedExpand
The investigation of electromagnetic processes in electromagnetic launchers using colossal magnetoresistance sensors
The development of rails and armatures which ensure a sliding solid-to-solid contact during the whole projectile acceleration is a great challenge in the field of railgun technology. MultifacetedExpand
The Research of an Equivalent Load Used for Testing an Air-Core Pulsed Alternator
TLDR
An equivalent load instead of the electromagnetic railgun is presented, which is used to accomplish the relevant testing research and theoretical verification, and the results provide a technical guidance and support for the actual railgun testing. Expand
Modeling and simulation of muzzle flow field of railgun with metal vapor and arc
Abstract During the electromagnetic railgun launching process, there will be a complex flow field with high temperature in the muzzle area because of the high-speed friction, transition and secondaryExpand

The coupled field-circuit model of a linear accelerator is presented in this paper. It is a three-stage construction. The field model was developed with using the finite element method (FEM). TheExpand
Optimal Switching Scheme for Multistage Reluctance Coilgun
Multistage reluctance coilgun has been developed greatly in modern military acceleration systems. Optimal switching of drive coils is of great importance from the efficiency and muzzle speedExpand
