We tested the effect of food availability on energy expenditure and torpor in the Chilean mouse-opossum Thylamys elegans (Didelphidae), which inhabits the Mediterranean environments of central Chile. Animals maintained with low food availability showed a higher frequency of torpor bouts in comparison to animals with high food availability, which never entered into torpor.
