BACKGROUND Venous thromboembolic events (VTE) remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality after trauma. Fondaparinux, a synthetic, nonheparin drug, has shown promise in reducing VTE in orthopaedic patients, but has not previously been studied in trauma patients.
