My article in The Mariner’s Mirror 100:2 discusses the folding and raising the masts of early modern galleys based on primary sources; it presents some technical problems associated with those processes and offers hypothetical solutions.1 Analysis in the article concludes that a tension of some 20 tons was required to raise the main mast after it had been folded and that applying such tension could lead to structural damage.
