Creating a 6-20 meter wide grass zone in between a watercourse and farm land is a fairly simple method to reduce nutrient losses and thereby also to reduce eutrophication in lakes, watercourses and oceans. This zone is called a riparian buffer zone. Farmers in Sweden have had the opportunity to apply for environmental grants from the Swedish Department of Agriculture for such buffer zones since 1996.
