Cell-cycle-synchronized DNA replication and cellular-environment-dependent gene expression are mainly controlled by proteins and DNAs with higher-order structures, such as G-quadruplexes (G4s). G4s are non-canonical nucleic acid structures that are formed by the stacking of planar Gquartets, and they are in equilibrium with random coils.
