}Flunitrazepam is a potent benzodiazepine that is subject to abuse and malicious use. This study describes the patterns of flunitrazepam abuse and malicious use calls received by Texas poison centers during 1998–2003. The distribution of calls by year of call, geographic location of caller, patient gender and age, exposure site, and medical outcome were determined. This study was a qualitative exploration of high-dose benzodiazepine users' experiences of anterograde amnesia symptoms and their beliefs about their behavior during the phases of memory impairment in a nonforensic setting, and it is suggested that forensic experts additionally explore evaluees' beliefs about amnestic periods and their self-perceptions about their behaviors during these episodes, when evaluating high-drug-dependent patients.

The evaluation of a substitution approach in high-dose benzodiazepine (BZD) dependence, consisting of maintenance treatment with a slow-onset, long-acting BZD, may be improved health, less craving, fewer withdrawal complications, reduced anxiety, increased treatment retention, improvements in social functioning and less illegal activity.
