We establish a generalization of the fluctuation theorem for partially masked nonequilibrium dynamics. We introduce a partial entropy production with a subset of all possible transitions, and show that the partial entropy production satisfies the integral fluctuation theorem. Our result reveals the fundamental properties of a broad class of autonomous as well as nonautonomous nanomachines. In particular, our result gives a unified fluctuation theorem for both autonomous and nonautonomous…

Fluctuation theorem for entropy production of a partial system in the weak coupling limit

- Physics

Small systems in contact with a heat bath evolve by stochastic dynamics. Here we show that, when one such small system is weakly coupled to another one, it is possible to infer the presence of such…

The fluctuation theorem for entropy production is a remarkable symmetry of the distribution of produced entropy that holds universally in non-equilibrium steady states with Markovian dynamics.…

We experimentally investigate fluctuations of entropy production in a coupled driven-RC circuit. In particular, we focus on the hidden-variable problem, where part of the circuit is neglected…

In some situations in stochastic thermodynamics not all relevant slow degrees of freedom are accessible. Consequently, one adopts an effective description involving only the visible degrees of…

Information-Theoretic Bound on the Entropy Production to Maintain a Classical Nonequilibrium Distribution Using Ancillary Control

- Mathematics, PhysicsEntropy

For a variety of control mechanisms, it is found that the minimum amount of energy dissipation necessary can be cast as an information-theoretic measure of distinguishability between the target nonequilibrium state and the underlying equilibrium distribution.

We consider a harmonically coupled system of two Brownian particles (say A and B) in a harmonic confinement. Whole system is immersed in the heat bath at a temperature $T$. Both particles are driven…

This work identifies a decomposition of entropy production into an exponential martingale and a purely quantum term, both obeying integral fluctuation theorems, and complements the general formalism with numerical simulations of a qubit system.
