We establish a generalization of the fluctuation theorem for partially masked nonequilibrium dynamics. We introduce a partial entropy production with a subset of all possible transitions, and show that the partial entropy production satisfies the integral fluctuation theorem. Our result reveals the fundamental properties of a broad class of autonomous as well as nonautonomous nanomachines. In particular, our result gives a unified fluctuation theorem for both autonomous and nonautonomous…
Fluctuation theorem for entropy production of a partial system in the weak coupling limit
Small systems in contact with a heat bath evolve by stochastic dynamics. Here we show that, when one such small system is weakly coupled to another one, it is possible to infer the presence of such
Fluctuations of apparent entropy production in networks with hidden slow degrees of freedom
The fluctuation theorem for entropy production is a remarkable symmetry of the distribution of produced entropy that holds universally in non-equilibrium steady states with Markovian dynamics.
Fluctuations of entropy production in partially masked electric circuits
We experimentally investigate fluctuations of entropy production in a coupled driven-RC circuit. In particular, we focus on the hidden-variable problem, where part of the circuit is neglected
Hidden slow degrees of freedom and fluctuation theorems: an analytically solvable model
In some situations in stochastic thermodynamics not all relevant slow degrees of freedom are accessible. Consequently, one adopts an effective description involving only the visible degrees of
Information-Theoretic Bound on the Entropy Production to Maintain a Classical Nonequilibrium Distribution Using Ancillary Control
For a variety of control mechanisms, it is found that the minimum amount of energy dissipation necessary can be cast as an information-theoretic measure of distinguishability between the target nonequilibrium state and the underlying equilibrium distribution.
Entropy production for partially observed harmonic systems
We consider a harmonically coupled system of two Brownian particles (say A and B) in a harmonic confinement. Whole system is immersed in the heat bath at a temperature $T$. Both particles are driven
Information theory limits irreversibility of thermal relaxation
Statistical mechanics has a deep connection with information theory. A prominent example is the derivation of the equilibrium canonical distribution through the variational principle by maximizing
Quantum Martingale Theory and Entropy Production.
This work identifies a decomposition of entropy production into an exponential martingale and a purely quantum term, both obeying integral fluctuation theorems, and complements the general formalism with numerical simulations of a qubit system.
Effective Fluctuation and Response Theory
The so-called fluctuation theorems pushed the study of systems far beyond equilibrium, whose response to thermodynamic forces (affinities) is characterized by the reciprocal and the
Information Flow and Entropy Production on Bayesian Networks
In this article, we review a general theoretical framework of thermodynamics of information on the basis of Bayesian networks. This framework can describe a broad class of nonequilibrium dynamics of
