The fluctuating and dissipative dynamics of matter-wave dark solitons within harmonically trapped, partially condensed Bose gases is studied both numerically and analytically. A study of the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which correctly accounts for density and phase fluctuations at finite temperatures, reveals dark-soliton decay times to be lognormally distributed at each temperature, thereby characterizing the previously predicted long-lived soliton trajectories within each ensemble…

Kinetic theory of dark solitons with tunable friction.

A general theory of stochastic dynamics for negative-mass objects is developed and it is found that their dynamics are drastically different from their positive-mass counterparts: they do not undergo Brownian motion.

Finite-temperature dynamics of matter-wave dark solitons in linear and periodic potentials: An example of an antidamped Josephson junction

We study matter-wave dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at finite temperatures, under the effect of linear and periodic potentials. Our model, namely, a dissipative

Brownian motion of solitons in a Bose–Einstein condensate

In this experiment, the added impurities scatter off the much larger soliton, contributing to its Brownian motion and decreasing its lifetime, and the soliton’s diffusive behavior is described using a quasi-1D scattering theory of impurity atoms interacting with a soliton.

Stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation

We have achieved the first full implementation of the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a three-dimensional trapped Bose gas at finite temperature. Our work advances previous

Direct perturbation theory for dark-bright solitons: Application to Bose-Einstein condensates

We develop a direct perturbation theory for dark-bright solitons and derive evolution equations for the soliton parameters. In particular, first the linearization equation around the solitons is

Anomalous Dissipation in Bose Gases: Analytic Theory of Energy Damping

The stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation (SPGPE) is a finite-temperature theory of Bose-Einstein condensate dynamics, utilizing a classical-field approach to describing the dynamics of a

Dissipation effect in the double-well Bose-Einstein condensate

Dynamics of the double-well Bose-Einstein condensate subject to energy dissipation is studied by solving a reduced one-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically. We first

Quantum fluctuation effects on the quench dynamics of thermal quasicondensates

We study the influence of quantum fluctuations on the phase, density, and pair correlations in a trapped quasicondensate after a quench of the interaction strength. To do so, we derive a description

Non-equilibrium atomic condensates and mixtures: collective modes, condensate growth and thermalisation

The non-equilibrium dynamics of trapped ultracold atomic gases, or mixtures thereof, is an extremely rich subject. Despite 20 years of studies, and remarkable progress mainly on the experimental

Engineering dark solitary waves in ring-trap Bose–Einstein condensates

We demonstrate the feasibility of generation of quasi-stable counter-propagating solitonic structures in an atomic Bose–Einstein condensate confined in a realistic toroidal geometry, and identify

Bose Gases In and Out of Equilibrium within the Stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii Equation

In this thesis, we apply the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation, using the formulation of Stoof, to the study of weakly interacting, finite temperature atomic Bose gases, both in and out of

Dynamics and interaction of dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract: In this thesis we experimentally observe the dynamics of dark solitons in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in the crossover regime between 1D and 3D. Dark solitons are dynamically

Fundamentals of Statistical and Thermal Physics

This book is designed for the junior-senior thermodynamics course given in all departments as a standard part of the curriculum. The book is devoted to a discussion of some of the basic physical
