A simple model for flowing sand on an inclined plane is introduced. The model is related to recent experiments by Douady and Daerr and reproduces some of the experimentally observed features. Avalanches of intermediate size appear to be compact, placing the critical behavior of the model into the universality class of compact directed percolation. On very large scales, however, the avalanches break up into several branches, leading to a crossover from compact to ordinary directed percolation…

Directed percolation with incubation times.
It is argued that the best approach to find the effective action for directed percolation is through a generalization of the Cardy-Sugar method, adding the non-Markovian features into the geometrical properties of the lattice.

It is found that the critical exponent associated with the order parameter (percolation probability) is beta=(1-1/square root[5])/2=0.276 486(8), in remarkable agreement with the best current numerical estimate.

It is argued that the reaction-diffusion process 3A-->4A,3A-->2A exhibits a different type of continuous phase transition from an active into an absorbing phase, characterized by nontrivial fluctuation effects.

To improve the ANN's performance, the GA's role was modified to evolve only the initial weights of the ANN while backpropagation training was employed for convergence towards the minima.

By means of molecular-dynamics simulations, this work investigates the elementary process of avalanches and size segregation by surface flow in two dimensions: a single ball confined to moving along an inclined line consisting of balls and finds that it is very regular and consists of many small bounces on each ball on the line.
