This dissertation is intended to explore the novel methodologies in early planning for deep submicron VLSI design. In its simplest form, rectangle packing is NP-hard and usually sub-optimal due to the interdependency of compaction in the x and y directions. Sequence pair (SP) and bounded slicing grid (BSG) structures were proposed to represent a general rectangle packing, in which the x and y directions are independently compacted.
