We discuss some methodological aspects of the relation between physics and metaphysics by dealing specifically with the case of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. Our main claim is that current attempts to productively integrate quantum mechanics and metaphysics are best seen as approaches of what should be called ‘the metaphysics of science’, which is developed by applying already existing metaphysical concepts to scientific theories. We argue that, in this perspective, metaphysics must be…

The Power of Inconsistency in Anti-Realist Realisms about Quantum Mechanics (Or: Lessons on How to Capture and Defeat Smoky Dragons)

In this work we argue that the power and effectiveness of the Bohrian approach to quantum mechanics is grounded on an inconsistent form of anti-realist realism which is responsible not only for the

Whence Deep Realism for Everettian Quantum Mechanics?

‘Shallow’ and ‘deep’ versions of scientific realism may be distinguished as follows: the shallow realist is satisfied with belief in the existence of the posits of our best scientific theories; by

Making New Tools From the Toolbox of Metaphysics

In this review, I specify the metametaphysical background in which Alastair Wilson’s “The Nature of Contingency” (Oxford University Press, 2020) should be properly understood. Metaphysics, as a

The Powers of Quantum Mechanics: A Metametaphysical Discussion of the “Logos Approach”

This paper presents and critically discusses the “logos approach to quantum mechanics” from the point of view of the current debates concerning the relation between metaphysics and science. Due to

The epistemic value of metaphysics

It is sometimes argued that, given its detachment from our current most successful science, analytic metaphysics has no epistemic value because it contributes nothing to our knowledge of reality.

Mythical Thought in Bohr's Anti-Realist Realism (Or: Lessons on How to Capture and Defeat Smoky Dragons)

In this work we argue that the power and effectiveness of the Bohrian approach to quantum mechanics is essentially grounded on an inconsistent form of anti-realist realism which supports not only the

Quantum Mechanics: Statistical Balance Prompts Caution in Assessing Conceptual Implications

Throughout quantum mechanics there is statistical balance, in the collective response of an ensemble of systems to differing measurement types. Statistical balance is a core feature of quantum

Realistic From Far But Far From Realism: Withering Scientific Realism in the Quantum Case

Much has been discussed in the philosophy of science about how we should understand the scientific enterprise. On the one hand, scientific realists believe that empirically adequate theories can be

Between Physics and Metaphysics: A Discussion of the Status of Mind in Quantum Mechanics

We discuss the ‘Consciousness Causes Collapse Hypothesis’ (CCCH), the interpretation of quantum mechanics according to which consciousness solves the measurement problem. At first, it seems that the

The mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics

Classical mechanics was first envisaged by Newton, formed into a powerful tool by Euler, and brought to perfection by Lagrange and Laplace. It has served as the paradigm of science ever since. Even

Thinking Outside the Toolbox: Towards a More Productive Engagement Between Metaphysics and Philosophy of Physics

he relationship between metaphysics and science has recently become the focus of increased attention. Ladyman and Ross, in particular, have accused even naturalistically inclined metaphysicians of

Right out of the box: how to situate metaphysics of science in relation to other metaphysical approaches

It is shown that the current metaphysical battlefield is richer and more complex than a simple dichotomy between “metaphysics of science” and “traditional metaphysics”, and that it should instead be understood as a three dimensional “box”.
