Partial 18S rDNA sequences from 29 flatworms and 2 outgroup taxa were used in a cladistic analysis of the Platyhelminthes. Support for the clades in the resulting single most parsimonious tree was estimated through bootstrap analysis, jack-knife analysis and decay indices. The Acoelomorpha (Acoela and Nemertodermatida) were absent from the most parsimonious tree. The Acoela and the Fecampiidae form a strongly supported clade, the sister group of which may be the Tricladida. There is some… Expand

Molecular phylogeny of the Platyhelminthes
TLDR
Phylum-wide analyses based on complete ribosomal and other nuclear genes addressed to answer the main issues facing systematics and phylogeny of Platyhelminthes are reviewed. Expand
Mating behaviour of the marine turbellarian Macrostomum sp.: these worms suck
TLDR
The first detailed description of the mating behaviour of a marine flatworm of the genus Macrostomum, a cosmopolitan group of microturbellaria, is provided and the function of sucking is speculated to be an adaptation for the digestion of sperm and/or the removal of seminal components, which may function as allohormones. Expand
100 Years of Research on ‘Turbellaria’
TLDR
Electron microscopy had a profound impact on morphological study starting in the 1970's, and the data it provided led to a new phylogenetic system of the Platyhelminthes as a whole, emphasizing the paraphyletic nature of the ‘Turbellaria’ within it. Expand

Phylogeny of protostome worms derived from 18S rRNA sequences.
The phylogenetic relationships of protostome worms were studied by comparing new complete 18S rRNA sequences of Vestimentifera, Pogonophora, Sipuncula, Echiura, Nemertea, and Annelida with existingExpand
Phylogenetic position of Acoel turbellarians inferred from partial 18S rDNA sequences.
TLDR
The deduced phylogenetic tree suggests that the three groups examined form discrete and separate entities, and suggests an earlier emergence of the Acoel turbellarians than the other platyhelminths. Expand
Molecular phylogeny inferred from sequences of small subunit ribosomal DNA, supports the monophyly of the metazoa.
TLDR
Almost the complete sequences of small subunit (18S-like) rDNA for two poriferans and a ctenophore are determined and supported the monophyly of the metazoa. Expand
The phylogenetic relationships of Kronborgia (Platyhelminthes, Fecampiida) based on comparison of 18S ribosomal DNA sequences.
TLDR
Morphological, including ultrastructural, characters and DNA data do not support a close relationship of fecampiids with any other platyhelminth taxon, although the DNA sequence analysis provides some evidence that the Acoela and Tricladida are closest. Expand
Molecular phylogeny of the animal kingdom.
TLDR
A rapid sequencing method for ribosomal RNA was applied to the resolution of evolutionary relationships among Metazoa, finding that coelomates radiated rapidly into four groups: chordates, echinoderms, arthropods, and eucoelomate protostomes. Expand
Aspects of the phylogeny of Platyhelminthes based on 18S ribosomal DNA and protonephridial ultrastructure

Evidence from 18S ribosomal DNA that the lophophorates are protostome animals
TLDR
Sequence analyses show that lophophorates are protostomes closely related to mollusks and annelids, which deviates from the commonly held view of deuterostome affinity. Expand
Phylogeny of the Rhabdocoela (Platyhelminthes): a working hypothesis
TLDR
The taxon Endoaxonemata, comprising the last common ancestor of the Neodermata, Pterastericolidae, Fecampiidae, and Acholadidae and all its descendants is named as a result of the study. Expand
18S rRNA sequences and phylogeny of platyhelminthes
TLDR
This study presents 18S rRNA partial sequences from several species belonging to the phylum Platyhelminthes, including parasitic groups and free-living forms, and supports the basal position of the Platy Helmetinthes in the radiation of Eubilateria, and rejects hypotheses of a secondary derivation of Platy Helminthes from the Eucoelomates. Expand
Contributions to the phylogeny of Platyhelminthes based on partial sequencing of 18S ribosomal DNA.
TLDR
Partial sequencing of the 18S ribosomal DNA gene was used to test several hypotheses concerning the phylogenetic relationships of Platyhelminthes and the following conclusions were reached: the Neodermata is monophyletic. Expand
