We propose a general framework for constructing and describing infinite type flat surfaces of finite area. Using this method, we characterize the range of dynamical behaviors possible for the vertical translation flows on such flat surfaces. We prove a sufficient condition for ergodicity of this flow and apply the condition to several examples. We present specific examples of infinite type flat surfaces on which the translation flow exhibits dynamical phenomena not realizable by translation…

Indiscriminate covers of infinite translation surfaces are innocent, not devious
We consider the interaction between passing to finite covers and ergodic properties of the straight-line flow on finite-area translation surfaces with infinite topological type. Infinite type
Rotational component spaces for infinite-type translation surfaces
Finite translation surfaces can be classified by the order of their singularities. When generalizing to infinite translation surfaces, however, the notion of order of a singularity is no longer

Ergodic infinite group extensions of geodesic flows on translation surfaces
We show that generic infinite group extensions of geodesic flows on square tiled translation surfaces are ergodic in almost every direction, subject to certain natural constraints. K. Frączek and
On the ergodicity of flat surfaces of finite area
We prove some ergodic theorems for flat surfaces of finite area. The first result concerns such surfaces whose Teichmüller orbits are recurrent to a compact set of
Dynamical properties of the Pascal adic transformation
We study the dynamics of a transformation that acts on infinite paths in the graph associated with Pascal's triangle. For each ergodic invariant measure the asymptotic law of the return time to
Dynamics on the infinite staircase
For the 'infinite staircase' square tiled surface we classify the Radon invariant measures for the straight line flow, obtaining an analogue of the celebrated Veech dichotomy for an infinite
Finitely-additive measures on the asymptotic foliations of a Markov compactum
An asymptotic expansion is established for time averages of translation flows on flat surfaces. This result, which extends earlier work of A.Zorich and G.Forni, yields limit theorems for translation
The invariant measures of some infinite interval exchange maps
We classify the locally finite ergodic invariant measures of certain infinite interval exchange transformations (IETs). These transformations naturally arise from return maps of the straight-line
Limit theorems for translation flows
The aim of this paper is to obtain an asymptotic expansion for ergodic integrals of translation flows on flat surfaces of higher genus (Theorem 1) and to give a limit theorem for these flows (Theorem
We define topological and measure-theoretic mixing for nonstationary dynamical systems and prove that for a nonstationary subshift of finite type, topological mixing implies the minimality of any
Invariant measures on stationary Bratteli diagrams
Abstract We study dynamical systems acting on the path space of a stationary (non-simple) Bratteli diagram. For such systems we give an explicit description of all ergodic probability measures that
The complete family of Arnoux–Yoccoz surfaces
The family of translation surfaces (Xg, ωg) constructed by Arnoux and Yoccoz from self-similar interval exchange maps encompasses one example from each genus g greater than or equal to 3. We
