T he members of the pipefish genus Microphis Kaup, mostly found in estuarine or freshwater habitats in tropical and subtropical areas, were reviewed by Dawson (1984), who recognized five subgenera and 2t subordinate taxa. In Japanese waters, three species were recorded by Senou et al. (1995): Miclvphis ( Oostethus) brachyurus brachyurus (Bleeker, 1853), M. (Coelonotus) leiaspis (Bleeker, 1853) and M.
