In recent years mammologists have suspected that the False Water-rat, Xeromys myoides (Thomas, 1889), an inhabitant of well-watered habitats in northern and eastern Australia, might also occur in New Guinea. The presence of the species has now been confirmed with two specimens obtained from the middle Torassi or Bensbach River, southwest Papua New Guinea. This paper briefly describes the specimens and collection site.
