Abstract We report on the results of the longest uninterrupted observation of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 1RXS J170849–400910 obtained with the BeppoSAX satellite in August 2001. The best-fit phase-averaged spectrum was found to be an absorbed power law plus blackbody model, with photon index Γ∼2.4 and a black body temperature of kTbb∼ 0.4 keV. We confirm the presence of significant spectral variations with the rotational phase of the pulsar. In the spectrum corresponding to the rising part of… Expand

Nature of anomalous X-ray pulsars, soft gamma repeaters and radio pulsars with very long periods
A brief review of the known models for the description of anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) is given. A new model is proposed to explain the main properties of theseExpand
X-ray intensity-hardness correlation and deep IR observations of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1RXS J170849-400910
Abstract We report here on X-ray and IR observations of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar (AXP) 1RXS J170849-400910. First, we report on new XMM-Newton, Swift-XRT and Chandra observations of this AXP, whichExpand
QED and X-ray polarization from neutron stars and black holes
The emission from accreting black holes and neutron stars, as well as from the highly magnetized neutron stars called magnetars, is dominated by X-rays. For this reason, spectral and timing studiesExpand
The Colibrì high-resolution x-ray telescope
We propose a high-time-resolution, high-spectral-resolution X-ray telescope that uses transition-edge sensors (TES) as detectors and collector optics to direct the X-rays onto the focal plane,Expand

Evidence of a Cyclotron Feature in the Spectrum of the Anomalous X-Ray Pulsar 1RXS J170849–400910
We report the results of a long observation of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1RXS J170849-400910 obtained with the BeppoSAX satellite in 2001 August. The best-fit phase-averaged spectrum was an absorbedExpand
New observations of the cyclotron absorption feature in Hercules X–1
ALTHOUGH neutron stars are generally believed to be born with intense (1011–1013 G) magnetic fields1,2, which then gradually decay3, measurements of their field strengths remain uncertain. In theExpand
A Glitch in an Anomalous X-ray Pulsar
We report the detection of a sudden spin-up of the 11 s anomalous X-ray pulsar 1RXS J170849.0-400910 in regular timing observations made with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. The event, whichExpand
An absorption feature in the spectrum of the pulsed hard X-ray flux from 4U0115 + 63
A spectral feature, apparently an absorption line, has been observed at an energy of 20.1 ± 0.5 ke V in the pulsed flux of 3.61 s X-ray pulsar 4U0115 + 63 using the UCSD/MIT instrument on HEAO 1. TheExpand
Discovery of Cyclotron Resonance Features in the Soft Gamma Repeater SGR 1806-20
We report evidence of cyclotron resonance features from the Soft Gamma Repeater SGR 1806-20 in outburst, detected with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer in the spectrum of a long, complex precursorExpand
The Pulse-Phase-dependent Spectrum of the Anomalous X-Ray Pulsar 1RXS J170849-400910
We report on the results of a 50 ks BeppoSAX observation of 1RXS J170849-400910, one of the five (plus a candidate) known anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs). The BeppoSAX data are consistent with aExpand
Proton Cyclotron Features in Thermal Spectra of Ultramagnetized Neutron Stars
A great deal of interest has been recently raised in connection with the possibility that soft γ-ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) contain magnetars, young neutron stars endowedExpand
Further Evidence that 1RXS J170849.0–400910 Is an Anomalous X-Ray Pulsar
We report the results of two ROSAT HRI observations of the recently discovered ~11 s X-ray pulsar 1RXS J170849.0-400910. A refined position with a smaller error radius (10'' uncertainty) and a newExpand
The Infrared Counterpart to the Anomalous X-Ray Pulsar 1RXS J170849?400910
We report the discovery of the likely IR counterpart to the anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 1RXS J170849-400910 based on the Chandra High Resolution Camera (imaging detector) X-ray position and the deepExpand
Soft X-ray opacity in hot and photoionized gases
New calculations are presented of the soft X-ray opacity of gas having cosmic elemental abundances, but in a variety of ionization states. Coronal ionization equilibrium is considered over the rangeExpand
