The importance of multidimensional effects for thermonuclear runaways that occur in thin stellar shells and surface layers is discussed. The runaway will initiate at a point instead of simultaneously over the entire layer and will propagate around the star as a burning front that requires a finite time to ignite all of the fuel in the layer.
