We study non-perturbative aspects of the Hagedorn transition for IIB string theory in an anti-de Sitter spacetime in the limit that the string length goes to infinity. The theory has a holographic dual in terms of free N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory on a threedimensional sphere. We define a double scaling limit in which the width of the transition region around the Hagedorn temperature scales with the effective string coupling with a critical exponent. We show that in this limit the transition…

Hagedorn divergences and tachyon potential

We consider the critical behavior for a string theory near the Hagedorn temperature. We use the factorization of the worldsheet to isolate the Hagedorn divergences at all genera. We show that the

Free fermions and thermal AdS/CFT

The dynamics of finite temperature U(N) gauge theories on S3 can be described, at weak coupling, by an effective unitary matrix model. Here we present an exact solution to these models, for any value

Random walks and the Hagedorn transition

We study details of the approach to the Hagedorn temperature in string theory in various static spacetime backgrounds. We show that the partition function for a single string at finite temperature is

Thermodynamics of AdS/QCD

We study finite temperature properties of four dimensional QCD-like gauge theories in the gauge theory/gravity duality picture. The gravity dual contains two deformed 5d AdS metrics, with and without

Phase transitions, double-scaling limit, and topological strings

Topological strings on Calabi–Yau manifolds are known to undergo phase transitions at small distances. We study this issue in the case of perturbative topological strings on local Calabi–Yau

Aspects of finite temperature field theories in Ads/CFT

In this dissertation I study some properties of field theories at finite temperature using the AdS/CFT correspondence. I present a general proof of an "inheritance principle" satisfied by a weakly

Phase transitions in q-deformed 2d Yang-Mills theory and topological strings

We analyze large N phase transitions for U(N) q-deformed two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the sphere. We determine the phase diagram of the model and we show that, for small values of the

More pendants for Polya: two loops in the SU(2) sector

We extend the methods of Spradlin and Volovich to compute the partition function for a conformally-invariant gauge theory on × S3 in which the dilatation operator is represented by a spin-chain

Hagedorn Strings and Correspondence Principle in AdS3

Motivated by the possibility of formulating a strings/black hole correspondence in AdS space, we extract the Hagedorn behavior of thermal AdS3 bosonic string from 1-loop partition function of SL(2,

Perturbative string thermodynamics near black hole horizons

A bstractWe provide further computations and ideas to the problem of near-Hagedorn string thermodynamics near (uncharged) black hole horizons, building upon our earlier work [1]. The relevance of

Closed-String Tachyons and the Hagedorn Transition in AdS Space

We discuss some aspects of the behaviour of a string gas at the Hagedorn temperature from a euclidean point of view. Using AdS space as an infrared regulator, the Hagedorn tachyon can be efiectively

Little string theory in a double scaling limit

A double scaling limit can be defined in string theory on a Calabi-Yau (CY) manifold by approaching a point in moduli space where the CY space develops an isolated singularity and at the same time

Touring the Hagedorn ridge

We review aspects of the Hagedorn regime in critical string theories, from basic facts about the ideal gas approximation to the proposal of a global picture inspired by general ideas of holography.

D-Brane Instability as a Large N Phase Transition

In AdS/CFT analyticity suggests that certain singular behaviors expected at large 't Hooft coupling should continue smoothly to weak 't Hooft coupling where the gauge theory is tractable. This may

Free large N supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory as a string theory

The strong version of Maldacena's AdS/CFT conjecture implies that the large-N expansion of free = 4 super-YM theory describes an interacting string theory in the extreme limit of high spacetime

ANTI-DE SITTER SPACE, THERMAL PHASE TRANSITION AND CONFINEMENT IN GAUGE THEORIES

The correspondence between supergravity (and string theory) on AdS space and boundary conformal field theory relates the thermodynamics of super-Yang–Mills theory in four dimensions to the
