Root respiration uses a significant proportion of photosynthetically fixed carbon (C) and is a globally important source of C liberated from soils. Mangroves, which are an important and productive forest resource in many tropical and subtropical countries, sustain a high ratio of root to shoot biomass which may indicate that root respiration is a particularly important component in mangrove forest carbon budgets. Mangroves are often exposed to nutrient pollution from coastal waters. Here we…

Nutrition of mangroves.
TLDR
Although mangroves have been proposed to protect the marine environment from land-derived nutrient pollution, nutrient enrichment can have negative consequences for mangrove forests and their capacity for retention of nutrients may be limited.
Fine root productivity varies along nitrogen and phosphorus gradients in high-rainfall mangrove forests of Micronesia
Belowground biomass is thought to account for much of the total biomass in mangrove forests and may be related to soil fertility. The Yela River and the Sapwalap River, Federated States of
The roots of blue carbon: responses of mangrove stilt roots to variation in soil bulk density
TLDR
Variation in soil BD has major implications for C sequestration in Rhizophora-dominated mangroves because it increases total root biomass and primary root diameter, while the primary root length decreased.
Carbon Budgets for Caribbean Mangrove Forests of Varying Structure and with Phosphorus Enrichment
There are few detailed carbon (C) budgets of mangrove forests, yet these are important for understanding C sequestration in mangrove forests, how they support the productivity of the coast and their
Soil Respiration and Belowground Carbon Allocation in Mangrove Forests
Mangrove forests cover large areas of tropical and subtropical coastlines. They provide a wide range of ecosystem services that includes carbon storage in above- and below ground biomass and in
Variable effects of nutrient enrichment on soil respiration in mangrove forests
Background and AimsMangrove forests are globally important sites of carbon burial that are increasingly exposed to nutrient pollution. Here we assessed the response of soil respiration, an important
Root Biomass and Production of Mangroves Surrounding a Karstic Oligotrophic Coastal Lagoon
Root production influences a range of belowground processes, such as soil accretion, carbon sequestration and nutrient acquisition. Here, we measured biomass and root production of mangroves
Distinct responses of growth and respiration to growth temperatures in two mangrove species
TLDR
The results suggest that the mangrove species require a certain warm temperature to ensure respiration rates sufficient for maintenance and growth, particularly in roots.
Growth and nutrient conservation in Rhizophora mangle in response to fertilization along latitudinal and tidal gradients
TLDR
Adding nutrients to mangrove ecosystems affected growth and the nutrient recycling, but the pattern depended on location, site characteristics, and the nature of nutrient limitation.
The response of the red mangrove rhizophora mucronata lam, to changes in salinity, inundation and light : predictions for future climate change
Mangrove forests are subjected to many environmental factors which influence species distribution, zonation patterns as well as succession. Important driving factors in these forests are salinity,

Effects of Nutrient Enrichment on Growth and Herbivory of Dwarf Red Mangrove (Rhizophora Mangle)
TLDR
It is concluded that phosphorus availability is a major factor limiting red mangrove growth at my study site in the interior of Twin Cays and that sclerophylly in oligotrophic ecosystems may be an adaptive mechanism related to nutrient conservation, and that it is associated with redMangrove survival in phosphorus-deficient soil rather than an adaptation to herbivory.
Interactions of Nutrients, Plant Growth and Herbivory in a Mangrove Ecosystem
TLDR
This observation and the demonstration that the mangrove skipper Phocides pigmalion attains a higher growth efficiency on high nutrient leaves are both consistent with the hypothesis that increased nutritive value of vegetation is responsible for the 4x greater losses to herbivores in the high nutrient area.
The effect of nutrient enrichment on growth, photosynthesis and hydraulic conductance of dwarf mangroves in Panamá
TLDR
The findings indicate that addition of N and P significantly alter tree growth and internal nutrient dynamics of mangroves at Bocas del Toro, but also that the magnitude, pattern and mechanisms of change will be differentially affected by each nutrient.
Foliage, fine-root, woody-tissue and stand respiration in Pinus radiata in relation to nitrogen status.
TLDR
Respiration was measured on fully expanded foliage, live branches, boles, and fine and coarse roots to determine the relationship between CO(2) efflux, tissue temperature, and biomass or nitrogen (N) content of individual tissues.
Seasonal respiration of foliage, fine roots, and woody tissues in relation to growth, tissue N, and photosynthesis
TLDR
Examination of spatial and seasonal patterns in autotrophic respiration in a Pinus strobus ecosystem found growing season variation in respiration for foliage produced the prior year was strongly related to [N] (r2 = 0.94), but fine root respiration was not related to[N].
Root proliferation in decaying roots and old root channels: a nutrient conservation mechanism in oligotrophic mangrove forests?
TLDR
Improved efficiency of nutrient acquisition at the individual plant level has implications for nutrient economy at the ecosystem level and may explain, in part, how mangroves persist and grow in nutrient-poor environments.
Coupling fine root dynamics with ecosystem carbon cycling in black spruce forests of interior Alaska
Fine root processes play a prominent role in the carbon and nutrient cycling of boreal ecosystems due to the high proportion of biomass allocated belowground and the rapid decomposition of fine roots
Nitrogen limitation of growth and nutrient dynamics in a disturbed mangrove forest, Indian River Lagoon, Florida
TLDR
It is demonstrated that patterns of nutrient limitation in mangrove ecosystems are complex, that not all processes respond similarly to the same nutrient, and that similar habitats are not limited by the same nutrients when different mangroves forests are compared.
Nitrogen vs. phosphorus limitation across an ecotonal gradient in a mangrove forest
Mangrove forests are characterized by distinctive tree-height gradientsthat reflect complex spatial, within-stand differences in environmentalfactors, including nutrient dynamics, salinity, and tidal

TLDR
It is concluded that the relative performance of mangrove seedlings growing in anaerobic soils is influenced by interspecific differences in root aeration and concomitant effects on root morphology and physiology.
