The research conducted in this study evaluated the asphalt mixture performance of various gravel and crushed stone sources consisting of different levels of crushed face counts, as determined by ASTM D5821. Along with ASTM D5821, two additional aggregate angularity tests were conducted to evaluate the angularity and texture of the coarse aggregates; 1) AASHTO T326, Uncompacted Void Content of Coarse Aggregates, and 2) Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS). Each of the asphalt mixtures designed and…

AGGREGATE TESTS RELATED TO ASPHALT CONCRETE PERFORMANCE IN PAVEMENTS
The properties of coarse and fine aggregates used in hot mix asphalt (HMA) are very important to the performance of HMA in pavements. Many of the current aggregate test methods were developed to
Influence of aggregate properties on performance of heavy-duty hot-mix asphalt pavements
Because approximately 85 percent of the total volume of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures consists of aggregates, the performance of HMA mixtures is greatly affected and influenced by properties of the
Characterization of Aggregate Resistance to Degradation in Stone Matrix Asphalt Mixtures
Stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixtures rely on stone-on-stone contacts among particles to resist applied forces and permanent deformation. Aggregates in SMA should resist degradation (fracture and
Selection of Aggregate Properties to Minimize Rutting of Heavy Duty Pavements
Samples of pavements from 14 states across the United States were obtained to evaluate the aggregate properties that affect rutting. Twelve pavements had provided excellent service for five or more
Refinement of Flow Number as Determined by Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester
Flow number determined with the repeated-load test is used as a criterion to characterize the rut resistance of hot-mix asphalt. The repeated-load test is performed with the asphalt mixture
Precision of ASTM D 5821 standard test method for determining the percentage of fractured particles in coarse aggregate
An interlaboratory study was conducted to develop a precision statement for ASTM D 5821-95, Standard Test Method for Determining the Percentage of Fractured Particles in Coarse Aggregate. The
Aggregate Properties and the Performance of Superpave-Designed Hot Mix Asphalt
This report presents a critical review of the technical literature available since the conclusion of the Strategic Highway Research Program in 1993 on the impact of the aggregate properties specified
SIMPLE PERFORMANCE TESTER FOR SUPERPAVE MIX DESIGN: FIRST-ARTICLE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION
This report presents the findings of a research project to develop a practical, economical simple performance tester for use in routine Superpave mix design and possibly in the characterization of
New Methodology for Shape Classification of Aggregates
Aggregate shape characteristics play a major role in determining the structural and functional properties of asphalt mixes. A comprehensive, statistically based methodology for the analysis and
