It is tempting to regard the system of representation at work in the vast majority of films produced during cinema's earliest period (which we may situate between 1892 and 1906) as an authentically working-class system, in opposition to not only the bourgeois novel, theater, and painting of the nineteenth century, but also an institutional mode of representation as it was to develop after 1906.
