A pronounced species variation in the organization of filiform papillae has been observed. Preliminary histologic studies of cat tongue revealed marked regional variations in size, shape and organization of filiform papillae. Therefore, a correlated light microscopic, transmission and scanning electron microscopic study of tissue samples of representative areas of the cat tongue was undertaken for further elucidation. Results showed that filiform papillae on the tip of the tongue were short and…

Morphology of the lingual papillae in the fishing cat.
We examined the dorsal lingual surface of an adult fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) by scanning electron microscopy. The filiform papillae on the lingual apex had several pointed processes. The

TLDR
The dorsal lingual surface of an old leopard (Panthera pardus) is microscopically examined and findings are peculiar to the tongue of members of the family Felidae.
Scanning Electron Microscopy of Lingual Papillae in the Common Shrew, Sorex araneus, L.
TLDR
The dorsal surface of the tongue of the adult common shrew (Sorex araneus L.) was examined by scanning electron microscopy and three types of lingual papillae were observed: filiform, fungiform and vallate papillAE.

TLDR
The dorsal lingual surface of an adult chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) was microscopically examined and a triangular arrangement of the vallate papillae, with the apex of the triangle directed posteriorly, was observed.
Scanning electron microscopy of the tongue papillae in the pig (Sus scrofa)
TLDR
The tonsillar location at the root of the tongue provides an ideal experimental model for immunohistological and immunological studies on the lymphoid tissue in man and filiform, foliate, and vallates apparently perform a gustatory role in the pig.

TLDR
The dorsal lingual surface of an adult lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) was microscopically examined, and many foliate papillae were observed on the posterolateral regions of the tongue.
Characteristics of Filiform, Fungiform and Vallate Papillae and Surface of Interface Epithelium‐Connective Tissue of the Maned Sloth Tongue Mucosa (Bradypus torquatus, Iliger, 1811): Light and Scanning Electron Microscopy Study
TLDR
The study of lingual surfaces and the surface of interface epithelium‐connective tissue of the tongue of Bradypus torquatus was performed by employing the light and scanning electron microscopy techniques and revealed a round apex and covered by filiform and fungiform lingual papillae and a ventral smooth surface.
Morphology of the lingual papillae in the Japanese marten.
TLDR
The dorsal lingual surfaces of two adult Japanese marten were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and zigzag surface structures appeared on the connective tissue cores of the ridges of the foliate papillae.
Macroscopic and Light Microscopic Structure of Lingual Papillae on the Tongue of a Young Lion (Panthera Leo)
The lingual papillae on dorsal lingual surface of a young lion (Panthera leo) of two months of age were examined by macroscopic and light microscopic observations. The dimensions of the tongue of the
The Perinatal Morphogenesis of Selected Lingual Papillae in the Domestic Cat Observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy
TLDR
The morphogenesis of circumvallate, fungiform and filiform papillae of the tongue was studied in feline foetuses at 48 days and in kittens a day after birth and attention was paid to the keratinization of mucosal epithelium on the dorsum linguae and to the distribution and development of taste pores.

The dual pattern of keratinization in filiform papillae on rat tongue.
TLDR
The histology and fine structure of the filiform papillae of the rat tongue is recorded as a basis for future experimental work and for comparison with homologous or analogous structures from other species.
Histological and ultrastructural observations of eosinophilic keratohyalin granules in filiform papillae of pig tongue.
TLDR
The ultrastructural characterization of these eosinophilic granules is the first reported in the literature and was observed in the cytoplasm and occasionally in the nuclei of cells within the papillae.
A correlative light microscopic, scanning and transmission electron microscopic study of the dog tongue fiiform papillae.
TLDR
There is a complex organization of the proliferating and differentiating epithelial cells in dog filiform papillae that exist as distinct units and correspond to the various surface projections.

TLDR
The studies indicate that the eosinophilic granules belong to the class of keratohyalin granules which are known to be heterogeneous in their morphology and biological composition.

The purpose of the present study was to examine this mucous membrane with histochemical and electron microscopic techniques in an effort to learn more about its morphology and physiology, as well as the general process of keratinization.
