}The first recordings from free-ranging Gervais' beaked whale (Mesoplodon europaeus) are presented. Nine Gervais' beaked whales were observed visually for over 6 h. Clicks were only detected over a 15 min period during the encounter, which coincided with an 88 min period during which no whales were observed at the surface. Click lengths were typically around 200 microS and their dominant energy was in the frequency range 30-50 kHz. While these clicks were broadly similar to those of Cuvier's and…

Data from multiple encounters in the western North Atlantic are used to provide a quantitative description of clicks produced by beaked whales, improving the effectiveness of PAM and enhancing scientific understanding and conservation efforts for cryptic and at-risk cetaceans.
Distribution, Abundance and Population Structuring of Beaked Whales in the Great Bahama Canyon, Northern Bahamas
- Environmental Science

The long-term goal of this project is to fill key data gaps on the distribution, abundance, habitat use and population structuring of beaked whales in the Great Bahama Canyon.
A description of echolocation clicks recorded in the presence of True's beaked whale (Mesoplodon mirus).

The spectra and measurements of the recorded clicks closely resemble Gervais's beaked whale clicks (Mesoplodon europaeus) and distinguishing between the two species in acoustic data sets proves difficult.
Description of sounds associated with Sowerby's beaked whales (Mesoplodon bidens) in the western North Atlantic Ocean.

The acoustic characteristics of Sowerby's beaked whales have not previously been described; the current study will facilitate incorporation of these data into passive acoustic monitoring programs in the North Atlantic Ocean.

These signals had higher frequencies, broader bandwidths, longer pulse durations and shorter inter-pulse intervals than previously described pulses of Blainville's, Cuvier's and Gervais' beaked whales.

Deraniyagala’s beaked whale, Mesoplodon hotaula, was described in 1963, but was quickly synonymized with M. ginkgodens making it one of the least known cetaceans, but sightings and acoustic recordings around Palmyra Atoll are believed to be of this species.

Beaked whales are an elusive group of marine mammals. They are infrequently encountered as they are pelagic, deep diving foragers with short surface intervals between long dives (Tyack et al. 2006).…

This paper reports the first Mediterranean stranding of a Gervais' beaked whale (Mesoplodon europaeus) that took place in 2001 along the northern Tyrrhenian coasts of Italy and is the first report of a MesoplodonEuropaeus in the Mediterranean waters.
Foraging Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) produce distinct click types matched to different phases of echolocation

Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris Blainville) echolocate for prey during deep foraging dives using acoustic tags to demonstrate that these whales produce two distinct types of click sounds during different phases in biosonar-based foraging.
CLICK CHARACTERISTICS OF NORTHERN BOTTLENOSE WHALES (HYPEROODON AMPULLATUS)

Sounds produced by northern bottlenose whales recorded in the Gully, a submarine canyon off Nova Scotia, consisted predominately of clicks, which suggests that 24 kHz would be optimal for an object of approximately 6 cm or more, consistent with the size range of their squid prey.

It is suggested that stable ICIs in the search and approach phases facilitate auditory scene analysis in a complex multi-target environment, and that a concomitant low click rate allows the whales to maintain high sound pressure outputs for prey detection and discrimination with a pneumatically driven, bi-modal sound generator.

M. europaeus closely resembles M. mirus, but has smaller pectoral flippers than M.Mirus and has a more dolphin-like beak and rounded melon, while the head shape of Cuvier’s beaked whale, Ziphius cavirostris, is blunter and paler in color.
Extreme diving of beaked whales

Using current models of breath-hold diving, it is inferred that beaked whales' natural diving behaviour is inconsistent with known problems of acute nitrogen supersaturation and embolism, and possible decompression problems are more likely to result from an abnormal behavioural response to sonar.
