Three main features of paleosols are useful for distinguishing them from enclosing rocks: root traces, soil horizons, and soil structures. Fossil root traces are best preserved in formerly waterlogged paleosols. In oxidized paleosols their organic matter may not be preserved, but root traces can be recognized by their irregular, tubular shape, and by their downward tapering and branching. Often root traces are crushed like a concertina, because of compaction of the surrounding paleosol during…

Depositional environment reconstruction of the Maragheh Formation, East Azarbaijan, Northwestern Iran

The Maragheh Formation is an important deposit, which yields the savanna-type large mammal assemblage known as the “Pikermian Fauna.” Our high-resolution facies analysis of the interval between the

Abstract The Permian Rio do Rasto Formation (Paraná Basin) crops out in southern Brazil and was deposited under fluvio-lacustrine settings. A singular outcrop located in the Aceguá municipality (Rio

PALEOENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF INVERTEBRATE FECAL PELLETS (EDAPHICHNIUM ISP.) AT AN ICHNOFOSSIL-RICH DINOSAUR NESTING LOCALITY, UPPER CRETACEOUS TWO MEDICINE FORMATION, MONTANA, USA

Abstract: The terrestrial feeding trace Edaphichnium lumbricatum is known from the Triassic to the Pleistocene and is characterized by tubular burrows with ellipsoidal fecal pellets, indicating

Tectonic-erosion interactions:insights from the paleo-drainage of the Brahmaputra River

This thesis investigates the interactions between tectonics and erosion in the eastern Himalaya through the study of paleo-Brahmaputra deposits in the foreland basin. Sediment depositional dating of

PALEOENVIRONMENTS AND PALEOECOLOGY OF A LOWER TRIASSIC INVERTEBRATE AND VERTEBRATE ICHNOASSEMBLAGE FROM THE RED PEAK FORMATION (CHUGWATER GROUP), CENTRAL WYOMING

ABSTRACT The Lower Triassic Red Peak Formation of the Chugwater Group has long been considered to have an extremely poor paleontological record, although the cause for the apparent dearth of fossils
